Case Study 3 - Labrador Eats Stones!!

Izzie, a 2 year old female spayed Labrador presented at the clinic afterhours following a two day history of lethargy, restlessness, loss of appetite and abdominal pain.  Now being a Labrador with a loss of appetite raised suspicion!

The owners were relatively sure the dog would have had no access to any toxic substance, but mentioned Izzie had a habit of picking up stones and playing with them.  We initiated an X-ray examination and found multiple small sized pebbles in her large intestine.  Undoubtedly, the stones caused Izzie’s pain and discomfort passing the small intestine in the previous days.

She was hospitalised on intravenous fluids, pain relief and supportive medication and was able to be discharged two days later passing all pebbles naturally.

Labradors will eat the strangest things, stones; corn cobs; plastic bottle tops and clothing are common!!
